4 Health Issues Linked to Compromised Oral Health

Oral health is often disregarded until there is a problem. However, compromised oral health can lead to a number of other health issues. This post will explore some of the health conditions that are associated with poor oral hygiene. Keep reading to learn more!

The Correlation Between Oral Health and Overall Health

Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between oral health and overall health. This connection is clearly seen in the case of pharyngeal and oral cancers. Every year, more than 35,000 cases of pharyngeal and oral cancers are diagnosed, which result in around 8,000 deaths annually. What else is left when oral problems can take one’s life?

So what explains this correlation between oral and overall health?  Periodontal disease, frequently referred to as gum disease, is generally due to bacteria in the mouth infecting the tissue around the teeth.  Dental plaque produces toxins that irritate the gums.  This can cause gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, where gums become inflamed, making them red or puffy, or causing them to bleed.

Actually, the bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay can enter the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body, where they can cause inflammation and infection.

Let’s now take a look at some of the health issues that stem from oral health complications:

Health Problems Associated With Compromised Oral Health

There are a number of health issues that have been linked to compromised oral health. These include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even pregnancy complications.

Heart Disease

There is a strong link between oral health and heart disease. Bacteria from gum disease can enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation in the arteries, which can lead to heart disease.

Stroke

Bacteria from gum disease can also enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation in the brain, which can lead to stroke.

Diabetes

Diabetes can cause a number of problems for your oral health, including an increased risk for gum disease and infections. Gum disease can also make it more difficult to control blood sugar levels.

Pregnancy Complications

Pregnant women are at an increased risk for developing oral health problems. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make the gums more susceptible to inflammation and bleeding. Additionally, pregnancy can also lead to an increase in plaque buildup on the teeth.

If left untreated, these oral health problems can lead to serious complications for both the mother and child. For example, gum disease has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

Final Thoughts: What You Should Do?

If you have any of these health conditions, it is important to see your dentist regularly and to take good care of your teeth and gums. There are a number of things you can do to keep your mouth healthy, including brushing and flossing regularly, using mouthwash, and avoiding tobacco products.
