Dental Sealants Protect Against Severe Tooth Decay
One of our top priorities is to prevent tooth decay and its serious consequences. , Dental sealants are a thin plastic film that’s painted on the chewing surface of your teeth to help prevent cavities and tooth decay. This type of treatment is relatively painless and takes anywhere from 5-45 minutes depending on the amount of treatment required.
Children and teens who are more prone to developing cavities make ideal candidates for dental sealants, though adults without cavities can also benefit from adding this extra layer of protection. Dental sealants have been proven both safe and effective. BayView Dental provides dental sealants for patients of all ages in our Sarasota-Bradenton, Venice and St. Petersburg offices. Dental Sealants Are Recommended for Children and Teens
As the name implies, dental sealants help “seal out” plaque and food debris from vulnerable areas between your teeth, especially those areas in the back of your mouth that are not easily accessible with your toothbrush and/or floss. It’s recommended that children get dental sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as possible, so that their teeth may be protected during their adolescent years from ages 6-14 when cavities are most likely to develop.
Occasionally, dental sealants may also be appropriate for baby teeth that have especially deep grooves. Dental sealants offer protection from tooth decay for up to 10 years on average, though you should have them regularly checked during checkups to ensure they haven’t been chipped or damaged. Dental sealants can be replaced by one of our dentists at any time.
