Are You Unhappy with Your Smile or Are You Considering a Smile Makeover?
Smiles are a powerful part of our beauty arsenal, credited with lighting up a face or an entire room. They can also transform a face from nice to radiant. Thankfully, with modern cosmetic dentistry, having a “killer” smile is possible no matter what Mother Nature or Father time had planned for us.
“A person’s smile is a key aspect of facial aesthetics, and that becomes even more apparent when someone has a facelift or any kind of augmentation,” says Dr. Kenneth Liszewski of BayView Dental Associates, who has practiced general and cosmetic dentistry for 30 years in Sarasota and Bradenton. “That means cosmetic dentistry goes hand in hand with cosmetic enhancement, but at the same time, you can’t separate functionality and aesthetics. Improved dental aesthetics also means better functionality and vice versa.”
Whether it’s a small enhancement, such as whitening teeth, or a full smile makeover, more and better options are now available. While additional choices are a boon, finding the best option can seem overwhelming. “We spend a lot of time educating patients about their options. With veneers, for example, someone can choose from a variety of grades of material from porcelain and zirconia to a combination of those two as well as less expensive composites,” Liszewski says. “There are pros and cons. Composites look nice initially but discolor more and don’t have the longevity of porcelain. There’s a question of how well these restorations will hold up for those with strong masseter muscles that close the jaw when chewing.”
